Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro (8 Days)

Your Kilimanjaro journey begins with a scenic drive to Londorossi Gate. After permits are finalized, we continue to the Lemosho trailhead. The trek starts in the dense, lush rainforest where blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys are frequently spotted. The day ends at Mti Mkubwa Camp, tucked away in the forest world.

We continue through the last of the rainforest before entering the giant heather and moorland zone. The path steepens as we climb onto the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth. We cross various volcanic streams and reach Shira 1 Camp, where the first clear views of Kibo Peak await across the vast plateau.

A gentle trek across the plateau allows for vital acclimatization. We explore the Cathedral Peak area and the unique volcanic formations that litter the plateau. We camp at Shira 2, which offers breathtaking sunset views over the Western Breach and the glaciers of Kibo.

A crucial day for the "climb high, sleep low" strategy. We ascend to the iconic Lava Tower (4,630m), an imposing volcanic plug. After a hot lunch at the base of the tower, we descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley, famous for its giant groundsels. This descent helps your body adapt to the altitude.

Prepare for the exciting Barranco Wall! This is a fun, non-technical scramble that offers the best views of the trek. Once over the wall, we traverse a series of ridges and valleys to reach Karanga Camp. This shorter hiking day gives your muscles time to recover for the final push.

The landscape turns into an alpine desert—a world of rock and ice. We trek toward Barafu Camp (Base Camp). The air is thin here, and focused breathing is key. Our team will set up camp early, allowing you plenty of time to eat, hydrate, and rest before the midnight summit attempt.

The moment of truth. We start our final ascent at midnight under a canopy of stars. It is a grueling, slow climb to Stella Point on the crater rim. From there, it is another 45 minutes to Uhuru Peak—the roof of Africa! Witnessing the sunrise from the highest point in Africa is a life-changing experience. After celebrating, we descend to Mweka Camp.

A final descent through the forest brings us back to Mweka Gate. Your Chipmunk Expeditions guides will present you with your well-earned certificates during a celebratory ceremony. We then transfer you back to Arusha for a long, hot shower and a well-deserved celebration dinner.
