Kilimanjaro Machame Route (7 Days)

Your Kilimanjaro adventure with Chipmunk Expeditions starts at Machame Gate. After registration and finalizing permits, we begin our climb through the mystical Afro-montane rainforest. The air is humid and filled with the calls of exotic birds and the occasional sight of blue monkeys. By late afternoon, we reach Machame Camp, situated just as the forest begins to transition into the moorland.

We leave the trees behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The path becomes steeper as we trek over rocky ridges and across small volcanic valleys. Your guides will point out the unique high-altitude flora, including the giant lobelias. We camp at Shira 2, offering spectacular views of the sunset over the Shira Plateau and the jagged peaks of the Shira Cathedral.

A vital day for acclimatization. We climb to the imposing Lava Tower (4,630m), an ancient volcanic formation. After a hot lunch prepared by our mountain chefs, we descend into the Barranco Valley. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is the secret to a successful summit. We overnight in the beautiful Barranco camp, famous for its giant groundsels.

The day begins with the thrilling scramble up the Barranco Wall. While it looks daunting, it is a fun, non-technical climb that offers the best views of the mountain. From the top, we traverse several ridges to reach Karanga Camp. This shorter day allows for rest and recovery before the final base camp arrival.

The landscape shifts to alpine desert as we approach Barafu Camp. This is our base camp for the summit push. Our team will ensure you are well-fed and tucked in by mid-afternoon, allowing you to catch as much sleep as possible before the midnight start.

We begin our final ascent around midnight. It is a slow, steady climb to Stella Point on the crater rim, and then a final push to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa! Watching the sunrise over the African plains from the roof of the continent is an experience beyond words. After a quick rest at Barafu, we continue down to Mweka Camp.

A gentle descent through the rainforest brings us back to Mweka Gate. Your Chipmunk Expeditions crew will present you with your certificates during a final celebratory ceremony. We then transfer you back to your hotel for a long-deserved celebration!
