Safaris That Give Back
Tourism in Tanzania is more than just an industry; it is the lifeblood of our economy and the primary protector of our wildlife. At Chipmunk Expeditions, we understand that our operations must be a force for good. We define sustainable tourism as an approach that balances the needs of the environment, the local communities, and our travelers.
When you book a safari with us, you aren't just a visitor—you are a partner in our mission to preserve Tanzania's majestic heritage for future generations.
We pledge to donate 5% of our annual profits to local education and conservation initiatives. From planting indigenous trees to sponsoring school supplies, we are hands-on in our commitment to Tanzania.
1. Empowering Local Communities
We believe that the best way to protect wildlife is to ensure that the people living alongside it are thriving. If local communities don't benefit from tourism, the pressure for poaching and land conversion increases.
- Local Hiring Promise: 100% of our staff, from head guides to office administrators, are Tanzanian nationals. We believe in providing high-quality, sustainable careers.
- Community Visits: Our cultural tours are designed with the community, not just for the tourist. We ensure that a significant portion of your tour fee goes directly to the village elder fund.
- The Arusha Education Project: We support three primary schools in the outskirts of Arusha, providing clean water filters and basic classroom infrastructure.
2. Conservation & Wildlife Protection
The Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Selous ecosystems are fragile. Our vehicles are maintained to the highest emission standards, and our guides are trained in ethical wildlife viewing protocols.
Our Field Protocols:
- Zero Road Off-Tracking: We never drive off the designated tracks, preventing soil erosion and destruction of micro-habitats.
- Distance Matters: We maintain a minimum of 25 meters from sensitive species like rhinoceros and hunting predators to avoid disturbing their natural behavior.
- Anti-Poaching Support: We contribute to local ranger funds and use our presence in the parks as an extra set of eyes and ears for the authorities.
Leaving No Trace
We are a plastic-free operator. Every Chipmunk vehicle is equipped with a high-capacity refillable water tank, and every guest receives a reusable stainless steel water bottle on arrival. This simple change has saved over 50,000 plastic bottles since 2021.
3. Carbon Offsetting and Future Goals
We acknowledge the carbon footprint of international travel. While we can't stop planes from flying, we are actively working on a local reforestation project on the slopes of Mount Meru to offset our operational carbon.
